Dick's set to acquire Moosejaw, an outdoor retailer, from Walmart.
Dick's Sporting Goods Acquires Moosejaw from Walmart
In a recent development, Dick's Sporting Goods has announced the acquisition of online outdoor retailer Moosejaw from Walmart. The deal is expected to close in March.
Moosejaw, founded in 1992 and known for its outdoor apparel and gear, will be moving over to Dick's Sporting Goods. The acquisition price for Moosejaw has not been disclosed.
Walmart initially acquired Moosejaw in 2017 for approximately $51 million. However, the retail giant has decided to divest from certain non-core assets and refocus its business efforts. This sale follows Walmart's earlier acquisition of Moosejaw to expand its online outdoor retail presence.
Todd Spaletto, the President of Public Lands (Dick's Sporting Goods' outdoor business), expressed admiration for Moosejaw's accomplishments and looked forward to sharing insights and learning from them. He believes there is potential to grow the Moosejaw business and provide enhanced experiences and a wider product assortment to its customers.
Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford will report to Public Lands President Todd Spaletto post-acquisition. Moosejaw currently operates brick-and-mortar locations in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, and Missouri.
Dick's Sporting Goods will run Moosejaw under its Public Lands outdoor business, which was launched in 2021. This acquisition marks an expansion of Dick's Sporting Goods' presence in the outdoor retail market.
It's worth noting that many of the e-retailers acquired by Walmart have been quietly unloaded or shut down by the retail giant more recently. This move by Dick's Sporting Goods suggests a strategic shift in Walmart's approach to its online retail ventures.

The acquisition of Moosejaw by Dick's Sporting Goods signals a potential war in the retail industry, particularly in the outdoor gear and apparel sector. This move also implies a shift in Walmart's finance strategy, as the retail giant seems to be focusing more on its core business and less on non-core assets. The integration of Moosejaw into Dick's Sporting Goods' Public Lands outdoor business will leverage AI and big data to enhance customer experiences and expand product offerings in the future.
