Downtown Lafayette will witness a densely populated apartment complex development reminiscent of Walnut-Creek's style.
LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA - A major new residential project has emerged in the suburban city of Lafayette, California. The proposed development, situated at 1001-1009 Oak Hill Road, just a stone's throw away from the Lafayette BART Station, is poised to bring a Walnut Creek-style high-density housing complex to the area.
The seven-story building, masterminded by Jeff Stone of Diamond Construction and designed by SDTarch (formerly Trachtenberg Architects), is set to accommodate 90 residential units. This significant increase in housing units marks a departure from earlier plans.
Offering a stepped, U-shaped structure encompassing two central courtyards, the project features a swimming pool deck on the fourth floor of the rear lot and stepped terraces on the upper levels. The structure spans approximately 172,400 square feet, reaching a height of 87 feet.
The project encompasses 135,700 square feet for residential and retail space, 2,000 square feet for retail, and 34,600 square feet for parking. The residential units will consist of 19 one-bedroom, 49 two-bedroom, and 22 three-bedroom apartments. Eleven units, designated for affordability, will cater to both very low-income and moderate-income households. A two-level garage with stackers will accommodate 186 vehicles, with 52 spaces reserved for bicycle storage.
The design for the development incorporates natural tones and materials to blend seamlessly with the hillside setting. Setbacks and a terraced design aim to minimize the development's visual impact on Oak Hill Road.
The location of the 1.2-acre site, nestled near Mount Diablo Boulevard, the city's main commercial corridor, will provide residents with easy access to amenities such as Safeway, Whole Foods, and the Plaza Center strip mall. The development will further promote transit-friendly living, joining other multi-story apartment complexes near the Lafayette BART Station.
Anticipated impact includes the demolition of two existing structures and the removal of 22 trees. Construction costs and timelines have yet to be disclosed for the public.
Residents are encouraged to attend the joint meeting of the Lafayette Planning Commission and Design Review Committee, taking place on January 21 at 7 PM at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, for a comprehensive review of the project.
