Drive-by Weight Checks Along Kolyma Highway in Yakutia

Beginning on May 25, mobile weigh stations have been installed along the federal highway R-504 "Kolyma" in Yakutia, with operations scheduled to continue through July 16. The announcement was made by the press office of FKU Uprdor "Vilyui".

Located at kilometers 177+960 (Churapcha village) and 264+800 (Ytyk-Kyuel village), the stations have been implemented to preserve the quality of the automobile roads and uphold the regulations for cargo transportation by road vehicles, according to management.

During the spring thaw and early summer months, road surfaces are more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles. The stations are instrumental in preventing excessive wear on the roads due to vehicles exceeding weight limits.

These measures also help ensure road safety by monitoring for overloaded vehicles, reducing the risk of accidents caused by unstable or hazardous loads. Furthermore, enforcing weight regulations aims to balance efficient cargo transport with infrastructure preservation, and minimizing environmental impacts in the delicate Siberian terrain due to road dust and vibrations.

At the mobile stations, vehicles are subject to weight limit checks. Commercial vehicles, particularly cargo trucks, must adhere to legal maximum weight limits established for federal highways. Overloaded vehicles may face fines or other penalties, such as being forced to offload cargo.

To maintain comprehensive monitoring, the stations are moved to different locations along the R-504 highway. Drivers are required to present transportation permits, cargo documents, and other relevant paperwork to verify compliance with load limits. Operations at the stations are continuous or are carried out during designated hours, focusing on peak transportation traffic times to optimize effectiveness.

This seasonal initiative is carried out by regional transport authorities in Yakutia under federal oversight, ensuring compliance with national road safety and infrastructure laws. The period of May 25 to July 16 corresponds to the seasonal vulnerability of road surfaces due to thawing permafrost.

  1. To maintain the quality of public-transit and transportation infrastructure, especially on federal highway R-504 "Kolyma," these measures, including mobile weigh stations, have been established in Yakutia, following the announcement from FKU Uprdor "Vilyui".
  2. By enforcing weight regulations at these stations on kilometers 177+960 and 264+800, the industry and finance sectors, particularly the automotive and cargo transportation sectors, will help in preserving the roads and reducing environmental impacts during the spring thaw and early summer months.
  3. The mobile weigh stations aim not only to monitor weight limits and ensure road safety, but also to balance efficient cargo transport with infrastructure preservation in the delicate Siberian terrain, while preventing possible accidents caused by overloaded vehicles in the public-transit system.
