Drone Disruption at Major German Airport Affects Thousands
Overnight, drone sightings at a major German airport caused significant disruption, with 81 flights affected and around 6,500 travelers impacted. Operations are expected to resume early Saturday morning.
The Federal Police confirmed two drone sightings near the north and south runways. In response, airport authorities and airlines canceled 12 flights and diverted 23 to other airports, with 46 takeoffs also canceled. Passengers were provided with camp beds, blankets, drinks, and snacks as they waited overnight.
This incident is part of a growing trend. By the end of August 2025, Germany has seen 144 drone incidents, up from 113 in the previous year and 99 in 2023. Munich Airport alone recorded 6 sightings by August. Last week, drones were spotted over critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein, and Denmark has also experienced air traffic disruptions due to drones.
The airport authorities emphasized that cancellations and rerouting were due to safety concerns. Operations are expected to resume early Saturday morning, but air traffic remains suspended indefinitely until the situation is deemed safe.
