Elbe Shutdown: Closure of Carolabrücke Extends Until September
The Elbe in the vicinity of the Carol Bridge is now off-limits to all riverside traffic due to upcoming demolition work on sections A and B of the bridge. According to the Waterways and Shipping Authority, this closure will continue until early September.
To ensure safety, the city advises everyone to steer clear of the Elbe near the Carol Bridge. Despite the restriction, traffic above and beneath the Carol Bridge can carry on as usual.
On Wednesday, the Waterways Authority installed yellow buoys to mark the no-passage zone under the Carol Bridge for commercial and recreational vessels. These precautions are vital for upcoming demolition work and expanding the construction area.
No inconvenience for the White Fleet! The White Fleet will keep sailing on all routes, departing from both sides of the bridge. They're expecting to operate freely again once these around ten weeks are up, when they plan to restore normal summer traffic on the Elbe in September.
In September 2024, the western traffic lane of the Carol Bridge collapsed over approximately 100 meters. Since then, the bridge has been shut down, with experts warning of further potential collapses due to structural flaws. The remaining debris of the affected span C has already been cleared in recent weeks.
While the specific reason for this year's closure is not publicly stated, river traffic restrictions in this region are often due to repairs, maintenance, construction projects, or preparations for cultural events. In such cases, local waterway authorities or Dresden municipal announcements would usually provide vivid details about the reasoning behind these closures.
The construction project on sections A and B of the Carol Bridge necessitates caution in the finance, transportation, and industry sectors, as yellow buoys mark a no-passage zone for vessels. The White Fleet, however, continues uninterrupted in the Elbe industry, assuring normal summer traffic in early September.
