Uzbekistan's Green Push: Empowering Small Biz to Go Green

Enhanced vegetation and business growth: Uzbekistan boosts efforts for Aral Sea restoration and encouragement of eco-entrepreneurship.

At Eco Expo Central Asia 2025, Uzbekistan unveiled a game-changing initiative - a national green certification system for businesses. This groundbreaking move is designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adopt cleaner, more sustainable operations, setting the stage for a greener future.

Over in Karakalpakstan, the region hardest hit by the Aral Sea crisis, Uzbekistan is determined to turn things around. Over the past few years, millions of hectares of vegetation have been planted on the dried Aral Sea seabed, leading to improved air and soil conditions. Now, the government is taking it to the next level, focusing on biosaline agriculture, climate-resilient farming, and water conservation.

Aziz Abdukhakimov, Uzbekistan's Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, shared his vision: "Our goal is to transform Karakalpakstan from an environmental disaster zone into a model of sustainable development." By doing so, they'll create a perfect blend of nature, economy, and community, where everyone thrives.

But what about businesses? That’s where the green certification program comes in.

Many businesses still view environmental standards as a burden. However, Uzbekistan aims to change that perception by providing access to green financing, international grants, and concessional loans. This initiative will encourage SMEs to embrace eco-friendly technologies, paving the way for a more sustainable business landscape.

This green certification system offers a range of benefits for SMEs:

  • Sustainable Business Practices: The certification provides a structured framework to guide businesses in adopting environmentally friendly production processes. This means reduced emissions, better water management, and more responsible resource usage.
  • Transparency: The voluntary certification process encourages businesses to demonstrate their commitment to environmental standards, fostering trust and credibility.
  • Financial Support: Uzbekistan offers financial mechanisms like dedicated credit lines and programs like the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) to help companies upgrade to green technologies.
  • Regulatory Enforcement: The government cracks down on non-compliance, ensuring businesses maintain their commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals: By implementing this green certification system, Uzbekistan underlines its dedication to balancing ecological restoration, economic development, and community well-being.

Uzbekistan's green certification program is a win-win situation. It empowers SMEs to transition to a cleaner, more sustainable business model, all while contributing to the country's broader vision of sustainable development and ecological restoration. It's a bold step towards a greener economy, and a testament to Uzbekistan's commitment to a healthier planet.
