A research report from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) reveals that an astounding 84% of businesses in Deutschland are currently grappling with a serious skills gap issue. According to IAB researcher Michael Oberfichtner, this skills deficit is the most frequently cited problem across sectors. Other irritants, as per the IAB Business Panel, include hefty labor costs and high absenteeism rates.

Two out of every three companies are skeptical about acquiring suitably qualified candidates in the near future, with the construction sector expressing the most concerns. A mere quarter in this sector expect no troubles.

When asked about potential solutions, an almost equal number of businesses advocate for measures such as continuing education programs, personnel development, and work-life balance improvements—all to combat the skills gap.

IAB researcher Ute Leber paints a grim picture for the manufacturing sector, stating that the weak foreign trade and the energy transition are significantly affecting the industry, resulting in businesses expecting too high a staffing level.

Last year, a staggering 55% of businesses complained about budget-busting labor costs—an increase of 12 percentage points compared to 2022. Industries like manufacturing, wholesale, and retail voiced these concerns the loudest.

While labor shortages are not as acute in entry-level jobs, there's still a serious recruitment struggle in areas such as helper jobs. The hospitality industry, temporary work services, agriculture, mining, and other service providers are getting the short end of the stick.
