The toxic sludge in Bruchau, a picturesque town in Saxony-Anhalt's Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, has long been a source of concern. However, the state of Saxony-Anhalt is set to turn the page on this environmental challenge, aiming to safely tackle the issue and restore the region's pristine beauty.

Saxony-Anhalt's Website

The contentious topic of the toxic sludge pond in Bruchau has been a pressing issue for years. But now, according to Saxony-Anhalt's website, the company Neptune Energy might soon receive a permit to keep the contaminated waste in the pond. The State Office for Geology and Mining (LAGB) chief, Uwe Schaar, announced this in a recent economic committee meeting.

A Future Without Danger

The current plan revolves around the company Neptune Energy taking concrete measures to minimize the environmental risks posed by the toxic sludge pond in Bruchau. According to Saxony-Anhalt's economy minister, Sven Schulze (CDU), these efforts are "a great day for Saxony-Anhalt and the citizens of the Altmark," as they pave the way for a safe and sustainable solution.

While exact details about the costs and implementation timeline are still under negotiation, the central objective remains crystal clear: ensuring the removal and storage of hazardous substances to safeguard public health, the groundwater, and the soil.

A Layered Approach to Safety

To that end, the plan involves the temporary storage of contaminated substances on the site, followed by multiple protective layers consisting of clay and asphalt. The LAGB will closely monitor this process to ensure compliance with the highest quality standards.

It appears that part of the mine water will be pressurized into the ground, roughly 20 kilometers away from Brückau, according to President Schaar. This is a common procedure, as the water is saltwater but not contaminated.

The Voice of the People

The citizens' initiative "Clean Environment" has called for discussions about the new plans with the affected residents of Bruchau, Kakerbeck, and Kalbe (Milde). The BI and some Bruchau residents were present at the committee meeting.

Stay tuned for more updates on this significant environmental project as Saxony-Anhalt works tirelessly to address one of its stubborn pollution problems, aiming to bring a cleaner, safer future for all.
