Essen's Vehicle Registry Hits 375,203, Driven by Electric Vehicle Surge
Essen's vehicle registry has seen a notable increase, reaching 375,203 units in September 2025. This marks a rise of 204 vehicles from the previous month.
The city witnessed a significant shift in its vehicle composition. A total of 12,762 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered, reflecting a substantial change driven primarily by increased deliveries of electric cars from Volkswagen, which surged by 89% in the first half of 2025. Meanwhile, Tesla saw a decline of 43%, and Chinese manufacturer BYD experienced rapid growth in this segment.
Diesel-powered vehicles remained prevalent, with 84,153 registrations. However, this number is lower than that of gasoline vehicles, which totaled 221,166. Passenger cars led the registrations with 301,342 units, followed by trucks at 21,152 and buses at 496. Motorcycles, trikes, or quads accounted for 23,945 registrations.
The increase in electric vehicle registrations in Essen, driven by changes in manufacturer deliveries, signals a shift towards greener mobility. Despite this, gasoline and diesel vehicles continue to dominate the city's roads. The total number of registered vehicles in Essen now stands at 375,203.
