EU leaders sanction Bulgaria's transition to the euro currency

From the bustling streets of Sofia to the calm halls of Brussels, the Euro adoption debate in Bulgaria is raging higher than ever. With the EU summit making the green light official, Bulgaria will join the common currency bloc starting January 1, 2026. While Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the gang of EU heads have endorsed the bold move, the good folks of Bulgaria aren't exactly celebrating in the streets.

Bulgaria's long-awaited entry into the Eurozone marks a new chapter for the country that joined the European Union back in 2007. As the 21st country to join the Eurozone, Bulgaria and its economy will experience significant advantages, including streamlined trade and travel. For frequent travelers and businesses, tossing around Levs will soon become a thing of the past. Meanwhile, tourists won't have to invest in expensive currency exchanges. But not everyone's thrilled about this change.

The Great Divide

It's a coin toss in Bulgaria these days. While some folks reckon the euro will uplift their lives, many others think it'll drive up prices and make everyday essentials out of reach. According to the latest poll by the Bulgarian Institute Mjara, a majority of Bulgarians (54.9%) pessimistically view the euro adoption, while only about a third (34.4%) support the European currency.

This stark division is due, in large part, to political tension and concerns around economic stability. For the pro-Russian populists, adopting the euro means inviting potential price increases, threatening the cost of living for ordinary Bulgarians. Their worries revolve around rising costs of everyday goods and services, fueling their resistance to the euro.

Coals to Newcastle

An ongoing car rally against the euro deployment is gaining traction in Brussels, with travelers hailing from all corners of Europe. And if that isn't enough, the pro-Russian nationalist party, Vazrazhdane, has planned another massive protest in Sofia. Party members accuse authorities of manipulating data to facilitate the euro adoption and lament the possible loss of national sovereignty[1].

Although the EU Commission and the European Central Bank have verified Bulgaria's compliance with economic convergence criteria, the public and some political leaders still have doubts about immediate social effects, particularly stability in inflation and consumer perceptions[2]. In the face of these concerns, Bulgarian officials have initiated price controls to prevent unjustified increases following the positive EU Commission and ECB reports.

To Euro or Not to Euro: The Great Question

Bulgaria must still enact necessary legal acts at the finance ministers' level for the euro to be functional with coins and banknotes in the country. As mandated by EU treaties, all member states, excluding Denmark, must join the eurozone once they meet the criteria. While Bulgaria is making its move, countries such as Sweden, Poland, and Hungary seemingly have no rush to join the Euro club[4].

As Bulgaria gears up to embark on a new currency journey, political instability, misgivings about economic benefits, and concerns over prices continue fueling the divide between citizens. But will this be enough to derail the euro adoption train? Only the 2026 countdown will tell.
