Event Focusing on Biogas, Biomass, and Bioenergy in Malaysia, Scheduled for 2025

Announcing the 9th Biogas Biomass & Bioenergy Forum 2025 at the ASEAN Energy Transition & Decarbonisation Summit

The 9th Biogas Biomass & Bioenergy Forum is set to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from September 24th to 26th, 2025. This event is a significant part of the larger ASEAN Energy Transition & Decarbonisation Summit, which focuses on a comprehensive range of clean energy solutions, strategic investments, and regional power grid interconnections.

The forum serves as a platform for policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and technologists to exchange insights, showcase innovations, and foster partnerships. The primary objective is to fast-track ASEAN’s energy transition using biomass and biogas, alongside other renewable energy sources, towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.

Biogas and Biomass: Critical Elements in ASEAN's Decarbonization Strategies

The forum will highlight biogas and biomass as critical elements in ASEAN’s decarbonization strategies. These resources play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, supporting energy security, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Innovative Low-Carbon Technologies

Discussions will focus on innovative low-carbon technologies tailored to ASEAN’s circumstances. This includes bioenergy alongside hydrogen derivatives, small modular reactors, clean coal technologies, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) as part of the energy mix for achieving net-zero targets.

Regional Renewable Energy Networks

Integration of regional renewable energy networks will also be a key topic. This includes efforts towards the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), which facilitates sharing renewable resources like hydropower and supports decarbonisation pathways and resilience across member states.

Collaboration for Clean Energy Investments

The forum will emphasise the need for collaboration between governments, industry, and technology sectors to accelerate clean energy investments and scale biogas and biomass projects across the region. This is crucial for addressing growth in energy demand while ensuring social equity and economic development.

Publishing on EB Publishing

EB Publishing, a platform for publishing news, events, jobs, and thought leadership, will be a valuable resource during the forum. Users can publish their content on EB Publishing for visibility, reaching those who matter to them. However, EB Publishing does not provide specific details about the cost or requirements for publishing.

Key Milestones in Malaysia's Biogas and Biomass Development

In 2023, 170 out of 446 palm oil mills installed biogas facilities, exceeding the NAPC 2025 target of 155 mills. On 2nd May 2024, Malaysia announced a focus on palm-based biomass as part of its National Biomass Action Plan 2023-2030. On 17th October 2024, SEDA allocated a 190MW feed-in tariff quota for 2025, covering biogas, biomass, and mini hydro projects. The target is to increase biomass and biogas power generation capacity to 1.4 GW by 2050.

Bioenergy: A Key Enabler for Malaysia's Energy Transition

Bioenergy is identified as a key enabler for Malaysia's energy transition, contributing to a reduction of 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) in greenhouse gas emissions. Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani called for immediate development of the biogas industry by palm oil millers.
