Expansion of A100 is imminent on the horizon

The future development of the Berlin city motorway A100 extension is shrouded in uncertainty, according to estimates by the federal-owned motorway company Autobahn GmbH. The A100 extension, once a prominent project, is now among the "further important planning projects" without a specific timetable, as reported by Tagesspiegel and confirmed by the German Press Agency.

In an updated financing and implementation plan, the Autobahn GmbH has outlined that the A100 extension is not currently listed among the projects for which "binding building rights" are expected by 2029. This is contingent on a potential increase in the federal budget for securing building permits by 2029.

The A100 extension, along with 73 other projects, is included in the list of projects for which "binding building rights" are expected by 2029, but only if the federal budget is increased in the coming years. The 17th section of the city motorway, which is part of the A100 extension, is not listed in the table of projects for which "binding building rights" are expected by 2029.

The responsibility for mediating the necessary budget increases to realize these projects lies with the federal government, particularly involving the Federal Ministry of Transport and the federal budget process that allocates funds to the Autobahn GmbH. The company must efficiently use federal funds and requires budget approvals for construction and maintenance.

The significant budget constraints faced by the federal government make it unclear whether the increase in budget necessary for the building permits will occur. As a result, the probability of the motorway extension being built in the foreseeable future has decreased.

In the previous version of the financing and implementation plan (2021 to 2025), the A100 extension was listed in the table of "projects to be started by 2025". However, the extension's future development remains uncertain due to the budget constraints. The 17th section of the city motorway has been downgraded in importance by Autobahn GmbH.

The A100 extension's inclusion in the list of projects for which "binding building rights" are expected by 2029 is conditional on a budget increase. The A100 extension's future development is contingent on the federal government increasing its budget in the coming years. Only if this happens, building permits for the A100 extension and the other 73 projects can be secured by 2029.
