Federal authorities inquire about Tesla's rollout of autonomous taxi services in Austin
NHTSA Investigates Tesla's Robotaxi Service Amid Safety Concerns
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is intensifying its scrutiny of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, particularly focusing on safety concerns raised by the upcoming and partially operational paid Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
Recent incidents involving Tesla's Robotaxis demonstrating erratic and unsafe behavior during testing have prompted the investigation. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation has requested detailed operational information from Tesla about the Robotaxi service. This includes geofencing boundaries, operating speeds, and the roles of in-vehicle and remote operators.
The agency has also inquired about whether vehicle operators will still be present when the service launches publicly. Early reports and videos of the service's operation have led NHTSA to investigate whether Tesla violated traffic laws during initial paid ride offerings.
Concerns about Tesla's autonomous driving performance in adverse conditions, such as challenging or inclement weather, are implicit in the broader safety and functionality concerns that have led to legal and regulatory scrutiny. Tesla is facing allegations of overstating the effectiveness and safety of its autonomous features, fueling shareholder lawsuits accusing the company of securities fraud related to misleading safety claims.
Various Tesla-related crash investigations, including fatal accidents where FSD was engaged, have further emphasized worries about the system's reliability and safety under different driving conditions.
Under the revised Automated Vehicle (AV) Framework, Tesla can deploy vehicles that lack traditional controls like steering wheels and pedals, bypassing certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). However, the NHTSA has requested information on the role of cameras and sensors in ensuring safe operations under conditions like sun glare, fog, dust, rain, or snow for Tesla's Robotaxi service.
As of August 2025, NHTSA's investigation is ongoing, centered on whether Tesla's FSD and Robotaxi technology perform safely and lawfully, especially given recent incidents and Tesla's plans for a public rollout of paid Robotaxi services. The agency's detailed inquiries into operational safety, control presence, and regulatory compliance signal a rigorous and potentially consequential oversight process.
Tesla has not publicly responded to NHTSA's latest request for information regarding its robotaxi plans.
