Waste Incineration Power Plant (WIPP) Solingen Successfully Completes Waste Boiler 3 Repairs

The Waste Incineration Power Plant (WIPP) in Solingen has successfully completed repairs on Waste Boiler 3, following a fire that occurred in November 2023. After over a year of maintenance, Boiler 3 is now back online and contributing to the plant's full operational capacity.

Details of the Repair

The repair work involved replacing a total of 4.5 tons of steel and 6,750 meters of cable. A specialist company spent three months cleaning and decontaminating the contaminated areas before the repair work began.

Current Operational Status

With all three waste boilers, including the newly repaired Boiler 3, now in stable condition and fully operational, WIPP Solingen is back to its optimal power generation levels. This means the plant is once again contributing significantly to local energy supply through waste-to-energy conversion.

The plant maintains its strict environmental standards, ensuring emissions remain within regulatory limits while efficiently processing municipal waste.

Future Outlook

The successful repair of Waste Boiler 3 enhances the plant's reliability and lifespan, supporting sustainable waste management and energy production in the region. The repair costs, totalling around 5.5 million euros, were covered by insurance.

25 subcontractors were involved in the repair work. Testing over the past few weeks has shown that the boiler is running stably and reliably. There are still some minor maintenance tasks to be done, but these will not cause any further disruption.

Redundant systems enabled continuous waste thermal treatment during the maintenance, and power generation was ensured during the maintenance period at the WIPP. The plant is now operating at full load, as previously stated.
