Following the rockslide incident, EUR 2.1 million was utilized for the renovation of B33 highway
The B33 road in the picturesque Wachau region has undergone a significant renovation, ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow following a rockslide. The project, which cost around 2.1 million euros, was funded by the state of Lower Austria.
The renovation, completed before Easter, involved the application of road markings, asphalt paving of the roadway, and the installation of cable barriers to secure the slope. A total of over 400 meters of safety systems will be erected along the B33, with up to five meters high cable barriers in the southern section and three meters high in the northern area.
To temporarily secure the slope in the connecting areas to the original rockslide event, the "Rock&Safe" system will be used. This will be replaced by permanent cable barriers in due course. Further safety measures are also planned in the two marginal areas of the rockslide, alongside the B33.
Provincial Councilor for Transport Udo Landbauer (FPO) announced the completion of the B33 renovation, praising the efforts of those involved. Construction on the next phase of the project could begin in late autumn, with coordination taking place in summer 2025 between the district administration, forestry, and nature conservation.
The responsible person at the Regional Government Office of Lower Austria for the expansion of the B33 in the Wachau region is typically the head of the department for road construction or traffic infrastructure, but the exact name is not publicly specified in general sources.
The final touch to the renovation will be the spray coating of the renovated slope, which will be applied on Thursday. Around 25 to 30 rock anchors will also be installed in the slope to ensure long-term stability.
The renovation of the B33 road has been a crucial step in enhancing safety and traffic flow in the Wachau region, and the community can look forward to continued improvements in the coming months.
