Keidanren's Committee on Mobility Pushes for Cross-Industry Collaboration to Shape Future of Mobility

The third meeting of Keidanren's Committee on Mobility, held in Tokyo on October 5, focused on promoting collaboration across different sectors to create the future of the mobility industry. Masakazu Tokura, Chairman of Keidanren and Sumitomo Chemical, expressed gratitude to the committee members and sponsors of the Japan Mobility Show and emphasized the need for bold investments in key areas like green and digital transformations.

According to Chairman Tokura, the mobility industry is a central pillar of Keidanren's activities due to its potential and ripple effects. To regain dynamism and maintain a global presence, he called for an all-industry effort led by the mobility sector.

Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Keidanren's Committee on Mobility, responded to reporters after the meeting, stating that they need to transcend industry lines and create the future together. This cross-industry approach is intended to create new mobility concepts and services that go beyond conventional car manufacturing.

The Committee on Mobility, which extends beyond the automotive sector to include logistics, power, and travel sectors, aims to stimulate growth throughout Japan's economy by strengthening the global competitiveness of its mobility industry. Maintaining and strengthening a free and open international economic order is also important, according to Chairman Tokura.

The Committee on Mobility first met in September 2022 and again in February this year. At the second meeting, Toyota Chief Scientist and Executive Fellow Dr. Gill Pratt was invited to provide a deeper understanding of Japan's unique carbon neutrality pathway.

The Japan Mobility Show will be held from October 28 at Tokyo Big Sight, and Chairman Tokura highlighted the need for acceleration of clean energy policies, including growth-oriented carbon pricing. The Committee on Mobility's plan is to facilitate a holistic mobility ecosystem that unites automakers, technology companies, energy providers, and government bodies to create comprehensive mobility services and infrastructure for the future.

At the inaugural meeting of the Committee on Mobility, the potential for the mobility industry's development was confirmed, along with the challenges to growth. Chairman Tokura emphasized the importance of the mobility industry for Japan's future, and the Committee on Mobility continues to work towards creating a sustainable and innovative future for the mobility industry in Japan. Masakazu Tokura, Keidanren Chairman and Sumitomo Chemical Chairman of the Board, also commented on the meeting without providing any specific details.

The mobility industry, a central focus for Keidanren, requires bold investments in areas like green and digital transformations, as emphasized by Masakazu Tokura, the Chairman of Keidanren. To maintain Japan's global presence and regain dynamism, an all-industry effort led by the mobility sector is necessary, as called for by Chairman Tokura. Moreover, to create new mobility concepts and services, the Committee on Mobility, which includes logistics, power, and travel sectors, is advocating for a cross-industry approach and fostering collaboration with technology companies, energy providers, and government bodies in the realm of finance.
