Former CEO of Micro Focus has taken up the position of Chief Operating Officer in the government.
Stephen Kelly, the former CEO of Micro Focus, has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer of the UK government. This appointment, made by Francis Maude, a Cabinet Office minister, marks Kelly's entry into the public sector, effective from July last year.
Prior to his role in the government, Kelly was the CEO of Micro Focus, a technology company. Under his leadership, the company's revenue more than tripled before he left in 2009 due to "personal reasons."
In his new role, Kelly will lead the Cabinet Office's Efficiency and Reform team. One of his key responsibilities will be to assist the government in negotiating new deals with IT suppliers such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft. These negotiations, according to the Cabinet Office, have saved the government £800 million.
However, it's important to note that these savings were not achieved during Kelly's tenure at Micro Focus. In fact, myCSP, a mutualized civil service pension scheme, was created during his time at Micro Focus. myCSP is part-owned by its employees and was overseen by Kelly, but the negotiations that led to the savings were not part of myCSP.
Kelly is also the chairman of the board of directors at CloudApps, a cloud-based software company. Before joining Micro Focus in 2006, his career spanned various leadership roles in the technology sector.
As the government's new COO, Kelly brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. His appointment is expected to contribute significantly to the government's ongoing efforts to streamline its operations and improve efficiency.
