Fortune 100: HR & Tech Lead Executive Roles, Cybersecurity Lags
A new study reveals the executive leadership landscape of the Fortune 100 companies. It highlights the prevalence of certain roles and the scarcity of others, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity.
The research shows that 88 percent of these companies list a Director of Human Resources or Chief People Officer. This indicates the importance of human capital management in corporate strategy. Forty companies include a Chief Information Officer, reflecting the significance of IT in business operations. Meanwhile, one-third list a Chief Technology Officer, demonstrating the value placed on technological innovation.
However, the lack of publicly listed Chief Security Officers (CSOs) or Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) raises eyebrows. Only five companies currently list a security professional in their executive leadership. This could be due to strategic decisions regarding public visibility and security, as well as varying organizational structures. Many companies do not list their security leaders among top executives as these roles often do not report directly to the CEO or board of directors. According to a Datos Insights survey, only 22 percent of CSOs/CISOs in large financial institutions report to the CEO. Furthermore, a survey by IANS reveals that 65 percent of CISOs still report to a technical leader, such as the CTO or CIO.
Other roles like Chief Marketing Officer are present in 37 companies, while only 21 include a Chief Risk Officer. This suggests that while marketing and risk management are valued, they are not considered as crucial as human resources, IT, and technology roles.
The study provides insights into the executive leadership structure of the Fortune 100 companies. It underscores the prominence of human resources, IT, and technology roles, while raising questions about the visibility and status of cybersecurity roles. Further investigation is needed to understand the reasons behind the scarcity of publicly listed CSOs and CISOs in these companies.
