Future Logistics Expo 2025: Barig Advocates for a Robust and Dependable Systematic Structure
In a bid to strengthen the competitiveness of Germany's air cargo hub, the Association Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (Barig) has issued an emergency call for urgent policy changes. The call, made as part of Transport Logistic 2025, highlights the need to address the ongoing stagnation and bureaucratic hurdles in German aviation development that have made the country less attractive to international cargo carriers.
Barig's core demands focus on a U-turn in the Berlin government's aviation policy, the reduction of bureaucratic obstacles, the revitalization and modernization of air cargo infrastructure, and policies that align better with the dynamic needs of the air cargo industry, especially amid the evolving "Fourth Industrial Revolution."
The association calls for the abolition of the national PtL quota and a reduction in fees for air traffic control, security, and infrastructure. They also emphasize the need for lower state location costs, simplified implementation of EU regulations, and reliable operating times at cargo airports.
Michael Hoppe, chairman and managing director of Barig, states that these measures will lead to a comprehensive reduction in costs at the German air cargo hub. Hoppe also points out that the attractiveness of Germany for international cargo carriers has decreased in recent years, with other locations often offering better economic conditions and more efficient processes.
The position paper, published by Barig and the Federal Association of the German Air Transport Industry (BDL), includes five core demands aimed at providing relief for the location. These demands will be discussed at a branch meeting at the fair on June 3, 2025, during the "Cargo Meet & Mingle Brunch" at Hall A1, Stand 216 (Latam Cargo).
One of the key issues addressed in the meeting will be the complex German procedure for collecting import VAT in the air cargo sector, which causes unnecessary costs. Barig demands improvement in this area to make Germany more appealing to international cargo carriers.
Barig represents more than 30 international cargo airlines with daily connections to Germany. Michael Hoppe emphasizes the need for the implementation of Barig's core demands by the new federal government and the states for the sustainable strengthening of air freight and the economy in Germany.
The meeting at Transport Logistic 2025 is not related to other events such as the IAA Transportation, Truck Testing Book, Drive Systems, Fuels, and Emissions, or other events focusing on truck testing, trailer components, apps and software, charging infrastructure, or apps and software (other). The topics discussed at the meeting will also include the need for improvement in the collection of import VAT.
- In light of the ongoing stagnation in German aviation development, Barig has called for the reduction of bureaucratic obstacles and the revitalization of air cargo infrastructure, aiming to realign policies with the dynamic needs of the air cargo industry, particularly during the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
- To attract more international cargo carriers, Barig is advocating for the abolition of the national PtL quota, reduction in fees for air traffic control, security, and infrastructure, lower state location costs, simplified implementation of EU regulations, and reliable operating times at cargo airports, alongside improved procedures for collecting import VAT.
