Heads up, drivers! The Central Association of Filling Station Industry (ZTG) is sounding the alarm about potential fuel shortages as we bid adieu to 2022. Managing Director, Jürgen Ziegner, warned Bild that it could happen, citing reasons that are as sobering as they are anticipated.

Gas suppliers' association voices concern over potential petrol scarcity

As we move into the new year, the reintroduction of the 19% Value-Added Tax (VAT) and the CO2 tax are expected to take effect. Starting January 1, a whopping €25 per tonne of carbon dioxide tax will be imposed, causing fuel prices to skyrocket by around eleven cents per liter. With more drivers planning to fuel up before the New Year's Eve festivities, this surge in demand could cause a fuel crunch.

Ziegner urges motorists to avoid waiting until the last minute. So, fill 'er up, but don't delay!

Good to know:

  • Germany's economic stagnation, high energy costs, and industrial decline, coupled with shifting fuel market dynamics, pose challenges to conventional fuel supplies.
  • Geopolitical tensions, global economic conditions, and disruptions within refining and distribution sectors could further strain fuel availability.

What can you do:

  1. Stay informed - Keep an eye on local news for updates on fuel supply conditions.
  2. Plan ahead - Consider alternative routes or transportation options if shortages are reported in your area.
  3. Maintain vehicle efficiency - Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained to optimize fuel efficiency.
  4. Explore alternatives - Where possible, look into options for alternative fuels or electric vehicles to reduce traditional fuel dependency.
  5. Strategic stocking - If fuel shortages are anticipated, it may be wise to fill up your vehicle before they occur, but try to resist panic buying.

In light of Germany's economic stagnation and industrial decline, coupled with shifting fuel market dynamics, the finance industry could be significantly impacted by potential fuel shortages in the other industry sectors, particularly the energy sector. As a result, motorists are advised to plan ahead and fuel up strategically to minimize the pressure on fuel supplies.
