German Customs Foil Major Cigarette Smuggling Attempt, Driver Faces Tax Evasion Charges
German customs officials in Stralsund have foiled a major cigarette smuggling attempt, resulting in a tax evasion case against a 30-year-old driver. The discovery, made during a routine inspection, involved a significant quantity of cigarettes hidden in a Polish truck.
The truck was stopped on the federal highway 24 en route to Hamburg using large-scale X-ray technology. A thorough inspection revealed ten cartons containing 50,000 cigarettes concealed within the vehicle. Six cartons were found above the bed in the driver's cab, with two more in a storage compartment on the passenger side, and two more in the trailer's storage compartments.
The discovery prevented a substantial tax loss, with a tax notice of over 9,600.00 EUR issued to the suspect. The case was initiated under § 370 Absatz 1 Nr. 2 of the Fiscal Code. Further investigations related to the customs offense are being handled by the Zollfahndungsamt Berlin-Brandenburg.
The successful interception highlights the effectiveness of Germany's customs enforcement, utilising advanced technology and the intuition of their officers. The driver faces potential penalties and further legal action related to the tax evasion case.
