Germany's New Skyranger 30: A Game-Changer in Short-Range Air Defense
In a significant move towards modernizing its air defense capabilities, Germany has invested heavily in the Skyranger 30, a cutting-edge short-range air defense (SHORAD) system developed by Rheinmetall.
The Skyranger 30 is a next-generation SHORAD turret system, integrated on an 8×8 Boxer wheeled armored vehicle. It boasts a potent combination of rapid-fire 30mm airburst munitions, versatile missile options, advanced radar and sensor suites, and strong integration into layered air defense networks.
At its heart, the Skyranger 30 features a 30mm KCE revolver cannon, capable of firing up to 1,200 rounds per minute with an effective range of about 3 km (1.8 miles). The cannon primarily uses programmable airburst ammunition such as Oerlikon's AHEAD rounds, which release a dense cloud of sub-projectiles to maximize target hit probability while minimizing collateral damage.
The system's versatile missile launcher can fire short-range surface-to-air missiles, including the FIM-92 Stinger (selected by Germany and the Netherlands), MBDA Mistral-3 (Austria, Denmark), SkyKnight (not yet adopted), and MBDA DefendAir (selected by Germany).
The primary sensor of the Skyranger 30 is the Spexer 2000 3D MKIII X-band pulse-Doppler radar, developed by German firm Hensoldt. This sensor can detect and track small aerial targets, including drones, up to 40 km (25 miles) away. It is complemented by electro-optical sensors for day/night target identification and tracking.
