Gigantic Electric Vehicle Manufacturer, Rivian, Launches Construction of $5 Billion Factory in Georgia
Rivian to Break Ground on $5 Billion EV Plant in Georgia
Rivian, an American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to begin construction on a new $5 billion plant east of Atlanta, Georgia, on September 16. The plant, expected to become one of the largest economic development projects in Georgia's history, will serve as Rivian's central hub for vehicle production, innovation, testing, training, and research and design.
The formal groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by Rivian executives, state officials, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. The event marks a significant milestone for the company, which has been planning this facility for over four years, first announced by Rivian in December 2021.
The plant will span 20 million square feet of developed space and is projected to be fully operational in 2028. Once operational, the plant is expected to build up to 200,000 electric vehicles annually, a substantial contribution to the growing EV industry.
The Georgia plant will become the primary assembly site for Rivian's next-generation vehicles in the coming years. The plant will produce Rivian's upcoming R2 SUV, as well as the smaller R3 and R3X models, which are aimed at bringing more affordable EVs to Rivian's lineup.
The public institution that granted Rivian a multi-billion dollar subsidy for building its second US production plant in Georgia was the state government of Georgia. Rivian secured a $6.6 billion federal loan and a $1.5 billion incentive package from Georgia to help finance the construction of the plant.
The plant will be located on a 2,000-acre site across Walton and Morgan counties. The new plant will include a test track, a training center, and research and design facilities, further solidifying Rivian's commitment to the state and the US EV sector.
Approximately 7,500 jobs are expected to be created at the new facility, providing significant employment opportunities for the local community. The plant's construction and operation are anticipated to have a significant positive impact on the Georgia economy.
In preparation for initial R2 production, Rivian's existing Illinois plant is being expanded. Meanwhile, a community event was held at the Georgia site on Sunday, offering residents and employees a chance to celebrate this milestone.
The Georgia plant's construction is a testament to Rivian's long-term commitment to the EV industry and its vision for a sustainable future. The first customer-ready vehicles are expected to roll out of the plant in 2028, ushering in a new era of electric mobility in Georgia and beyond.
