Hyundai and GM Announce Strategic Partnership to Co-Develop Five New Vehicles

Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors (GM) have joined forces in a strategic partnership to co-develop five all-new vehicles, focusing on the South and Central American markets, with production set to begin in 2028.

The collaboration, which extends to technology, materials, components, electronics, software, and electrification solutions, is not just a badge-engineering exercise. Each model will have unique styling and interiors, tailored to each brand's identity.

The first co-developed vehicles demonstrate the use of complementary strengths and combined scale. The four vehicles for Central and South America will include a compact SUV, a compact car, a compact pickup truck, and a mid-size pickup truck. These vehicles will offer flexible powertrains, with either internal combustion engine (ICE) or hybrid systems, to address growing demands in emerging markets.

In addition, an electric commercial van for North America will be developed, targeting the U.S. market and produced in the United States from 2028. Hyundai will lead the development of this electric van, with GM contributing through their alliance.

GM will lead the mid-size truck platform, while Hyundai will spearhead the compact vehicle and electric van programs. Both companies will share the platforms but will design unique interiors and exteriors to maintain their distinct brand identities.

The combined scale of Hyundai and GM in North and South America will allow for more effective meeting of customer expectations. The vehicles developed through this partnership will feature well-designed, high-quality interiors and exteriors, with a focus on safety and technologies valued by customers.

According to Hyundai CEO José Muñoz, the collaboration will help deliver value and choice to customers across multiple segments and markets. GM's senior vice-president Shilpan Amin believes the collaboration will deliver more choice to customers, faster and at lower cost.

The partnership aims to meet customer expectations more effectively and deliver value across multiple segments and markets. The combined annual sales for these vehicles are projected to exceed 800,000 units once fully ramped up.

Here's an overview of the five new models:
