Government to allocate £500 million towards various sports events; potential funding shortfall for Athletics World Championships may ensue
The UK Government is on board to bankroll significant sporting events, such as the 2028 Euros and 2027 Tour de France depart, to the tune of half a billion pounds. However, the government hasn't publicly endorsed the 2029 World Athletics Championships - a bid led by British Athletics if it comes to pass.
On Thursday evening, DCMS Secretary Lisa Nandy announced a whopping £900m investment into high-profile sports events and grassroots sports. This includes the Euro 2028, slated for co-hosting by the UK and Ireland, with project leader Debbie Hewitt MBE stating the funds will not only prop up a first-class tournament but also leave lasting benefits for communities across the country.
The Euros are estimated to generate a staggering £2.5bn in socio-economic value. Also on the agenda are funds for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham next year and the men's and women's Tour de France Grand Departs in 2027.
Yet, there's been silence on the 2029 World Athletics Championships - an event London would bid for if the government greenlights British Athletics' plans. Athletes and organizations have been haranguing the government to put up the required funding before the September bidding deadline. Even London Mayor Sadiq Khan has suggested the athletics meet at the London Stadium could kickstart a potential 2040 London Olympics bid.
Despite not making the list of major events the UK will help fund, it seems DCMS hasn't closed the door on backing the World Athletics Championships in 2029. They haven't officially committed either. As Nandy stated, "Sport occupies a unique position in our nation, uniting communities, inspiring millions, and showcasing our country on the global stage." The additional investment from the government will generate economic growth and create a platform for the next generation of sports stars to excel, she added.
Sports and finance are intertwined as the UK Government considers investing in the 2029 World Athletics Championships, despite no official commitment yet. If the government decides to support British Athletics' bid, it could potentially kickstart a 2040 London Olympics bid, showcasing a further investment in sports and athletes, as stated by DCMS Secretary Lisa Nandy.
