Westwater Resources Achieves Milestone with Patent for Innovative Graphite Purification Method
Westwater Resources, Inc., an energy technology and critical minerals company, has made a significant stride in its technological advancement with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarding U.S. Patent Number 12,415,731 for its proprietary graphite purification method. The patent pertains to the Kellyton Graphite Processing Plant's innovative purification process.
Terence Cryan, Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Westwater Resources, expressed his dedication to helping supply the critical minerals that the U.S. needs to support energy independence. He stated that the patent protects Westwater's environmentally-friendly purification technology, positioning the company as a leader in sustainable production of battery-grade natural graphite.
The patented process, first filed in August 2020, avoids the use of hydrofluoric acid, a hazardous substance often relied upon in conventional methods. This more environmentally-friendly approach offers a more sustainable alternative to traditional purification techniques commonly used in China and other countries.
The city of Kellyton hosts the Kellyton Graphite Processing Plant, equipped by Westwater Resources for the production of battery-grade natural graphite. The patent reinforces Westwater's dedication to sustainable, domestic production of car batteries.
Westwater Resources is now the holder of a patent for a unique graphite purification method. Mr. Cryan also stated that Westwater is the most advanced, U.S.-based producer of battery-grade natural batteries. The patented technology is a significant step in Westwater's technological advancement in the battery industry.
