Green Card lottery's participation fee has been disclosed: what you'll pay for a chance at residency
The Green Card lottery, a popular programme offering a chance to obtain a U.S. residence permit, has announced a new registration fee for 2023. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State have proposed this change to fairly distribute the burden of lottery registration among all participants.
In 2023, over 22 million people participated in the Green Card lottery, and the proposed fee of $1 is intended to address the costs of managing the news system. Previously, registration for the lottery was free.
The new fee will be added to the costs associated with the Green Card lottery registration process and will be part of the consular services fees of the Department of State. The exact dates for the implementation of the new fee have not yet been announced, but it is expected to take place before the start of the new program season in early October.
The Green Card lottery, which has been operating since 1990, randomly awards 50,000 U.S. residence permits to foreigners each year. In addition, an additional 5,000 are allocated annually for Central American countries.
This news comes after changes made to the rules for Belarusians to obtain a U.S. visa, as previously announced by the State Department. The new fee is a significant development in the management of the Green Card lottery, aiming to ensure its continued operation and fairness for all participants.
