Greifswald Launches Mandatory Rent Index Survey for Fair Housing
A comprehensive survey to establish Greifswald's first certified rentcafe index has begun. Both tenants and landlords are urged to participate for an accurate representation of local rent levels.
The survey, launched in early September, runs until the end of October. It excludes certain housing types like student dormitories and self-occupied properties. Participation is mandatory, and information must be complete and accurate.
Non-respondents will receive a reminder letter with a paper questionnaire and prepaid return envelope in early October. Around 1,000 people have already participated, including 500 rental households and 350 landlords. Online participation is still possible and preferred.
The rentcafe index, set to publish in March 2026, will promote transparency and fairness in the apartments market. It will protect tenants from excessive demands. The results will be available on the city's website, accompanied by a free brochure and an online rent calculator.
