Top-Flight Ambitions and Financial Stability: Hertha BSC's Agenda for the New Season

Berlin-based football club Hertha BSC has set high objectives for itself in its annual general meeting - promotion to the Bundesliga and a financially solid foundation.

Head coach Stefan Leitl, who took over from Cristian Fiél in February and averted the team's relegation to the third division, called for further investment in the team. Addressing the AGM digitally, Leitl emphasized the need for astute decision-making over the summer break.

President Fabian Drescher praised the sporting turnaround under Leitl, but stressed the need for even greater ambition going forward. "Our aim cannot be to finish eleventh in the 2. Bundesliga. We must be more ambitious and hungry. Our aim must be to strive for promotion without compromising," Drescher declared.

The club recently extended the contracts of top players Fabian Reese and Michael Cuisance, indicating their focus on retaining key talents ahead of the upcoming season. Preparations for the next campaign will begin on June 23.

Drescher expressed his displeasure regarding leaks about potential general manager candidates, with various names surfacing in the media recently. No clear consensus has been reached yet, and talks are still ongoing. Ralf Huschen, the club's chief financial officer, will oversee business operations in the professional department until a new general manager is appointed.

Huschen wants to eradicate all debt and emphasized that discussions are ongoing regarding the future of the Nordic-Bond bond worth 40 million euros, which is due for redemption in November. He confirmed that the club's first option is to redeem the bond, though investors still have time to make a decision on this matter until June 3.

Drescher dismissed rumors of investment partner 777 Partners withdrawing their support, stating that no indications of this have been observed and no buyback of shares has been requested.

Sporting director Benny Weber, head coach Leitl, and club president Drescher are already planning diligently for the upcoming season, with a commitment to professional and thorough preparation.

Thomas E. Herrich, who held various roles at the club for 25 years, has stepped down, with Drescher stating the move is aimed at a comprehensive realignment with the objective of returning Hertha BSC to the Bundesliga and establishing the club on a healthy and sustainable financial footing.

  1. Despite financial concerns, such as the Nordic-Bond debt and potential investor decisions, Hertha BSC's focus remains on Community aid to the steel industry of maintaining a solid financial base, especially with the ambition of promotion to the Bundesliga.
  2. As the club continues to make strategic moves, like extending key player contracts and reorganizing positions, the business aspect remains at the forefront, with the aim of avoiding compromise in pursuit of success, as emphasized by President Fabian Drescher.
  3. In addition to football, the club's agenda encompasses more than just sports, extending to the European-leagues and Premier-League, as they seek greater ambition and a financially stable future.
