The state parliament of Hesse has approved a bill to ease building regulations, aiming to tackle the shortage of affordable houses for sale. The reform, supported by the ruling coalition and opposition, was passed despite abstentions from FDP and Greens.

The reform, based on proposals from an expert commission, seeks to simplify and speed up construction through bureaucratic cuts. Key changes include relaxed regulations for parking spaces, easier approvals for subsequent roof extensions creating additional apartments, and reduced requirements for installing a playground.

Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs, Kaweh Mansoori (SPD), who championed the reform, stressed the importance of affordable homes. He stated, 'Housing is a basic need. Affordable houses for sale are a cornerstone for social security and provide a solid foundation for life planning.' The expert commission's proposals, though not attributed to specific members, were instrumental in shaping the revised building code.
