HMRC Releases Publication of Pension Schemes Newsletter Number 171
HMRC Announces Major Changes to Pension Scheme Reporting
In a significant move, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced that it will be consolidating its pension scheme reporting processes, moving them to the Managing Pension Schemes (MPS) service from the 2024/2025 tax year.
The changes were detailed in HMRC's Pension Schemes Newsletter 171, published on July 30, 2025. One of the key updates is the relocation of the lifetime allowance protections look-up service to the MPS service, scheduled to take place later this year.
To access this service, scheme administrators and authorised practitioners will need to register as such on the MPS service. Practitioners will have view-only access to the protections on the new look-up service.
The MPS service is now mandatory for all pension scheme administrators and practitioners. It allows users to view all pension schemes in one place, with real-time updates of changes, submitted information, payments, and charges. A video guide has been provided by HMRC to help with enrolling and migrating pension schemes to the MPS service.
The MPS service is set to replace the existing platform for all pension reporting duties, including creating, compiling, and submitting pension scheme returns. Schemes must be enrolled and migrated onto the MPS to receive filing notices and manage reporting obligations.
Other topics covered in the newsletter include reforms to inheritance tax on pensions and pension flexibility statistics, but the move of the lifetime allowance protection look-up service to the MPS platform is a key administrative update aimed at consolidation and improved service access via the MPS platform.
In summary, the major change is the migration of the lifetime allowance protections lookup and all pension scheme reporting processes to the Managing Pension Schemes service, requiring pension scheme administrators and authorised practitioners to register and use MPS for all relevant interactions with HMRC on pension schemes.
