House Yet to Pass Bruen-Aligned Gun Legislation as Permitless Carry Expands
The US House of Representatives is yet to pass legislation aligning with the Supreme Court's ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which affirms Americans' right to carry handguns for self-defense outside the home. This comes as permitless or 'constitutional' carry expands, with 29 states now recognizing this right.
The Supreme Court's decision in Bruen was grounded in historical practices and legal traditions dating back to the country's founding. The Court found no legal tradition of regulating public carry by the general public, and only narrowly prohibited carrying arms in a way that terrorized the citizenry. This ruling builds on previous decisions confirming the right to 'bear arms' for self-defense.
Concealed-carry reciprocity is now the majority practice among states, with even gun-control advocates finding it hard to argue against it. However, a few states still resist recognizing these rights, treating carriers as presumptive criminals. Congress has the duty and authority to pass a national concealed-carry reciprocity bill, with pending bills in the House and Senate. This has been a long-standing priority for the NRA-ILA.
The US House of Representatives is urged to pass legislation aligning with the Supreme Court's Bruen ruling, ensuring national reciprocity for lawful concealed carry. This would harmonize state laws and protect the rights of gun owners across the country.
