The Wuling Xincheng, a five-seat compact crossover SUV, has recently made its debut on the Chinese car market. This new addition to the Wuling brand, best known for its microvans and affordable vehicles, marks a strategic move towards more modernized and diversified vehicle models.
Manufactured by SAIC-GM-Wuling, the Wuling Xincheng is not a hybrid vehicle like the Wuling Almaz Hybrid launched in Indonesia. Instead, it is powered by a 1.5 turbo engine with 147 hp and 250 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual or a CVT.
The Wuling Xincheng boasts a V-shaped grille design that echoes the brand's v-shaped '5-diamond' logo, and it is decently sized with a length of 4594mm, width of 1820mm, height of 1740mm, and a wheelbase of 2750mm.
The Wuling Xincheng is aimed at a young consumer market, with its interior featuring a flat-bottomed steering wheel, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25 inch central touch screen. The available colours for the car, such as Rainy azure, Cold mountain twilight purple, Cloud sea blue, Misty warm tea, and Bright moon cream white, reflect the intended target group.
The Wuling Xincheng shares some platforms and technologies with the Baojun 630, but it is not the same model as the Audi Q6, which was unveiled in China with a starting price of $74,000, significantly higher than the Wuling Xincheng's price range.
The Wuling Xincheng is not a fully electric vehicle, and it does not offer 6C charging like the one General Motors plans to produce in China. However, its infotainment system runs on Wuling's "Ling OS" operating system, which offers over-the-air updates (OTA).
The Wuling Xincheng, also known as the Wuling Asta for export, is part of the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture, a collaboration between SAIC Motor, General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors, established in 2002. The price range for the Wuling Xincheng is relatively affordable for a vehicle of its size and kind, making it an attractive option for young consumers in China.
- The entrance of the Wuling Xincheng in the Chinese market signifies a significant shift in the automotive industry, as the brand, traditionally known for microvans and affordable vehicles, ventures into a more diverse range of modern vehicle models.
- With the Wuling Xincheng, the brand's focus on young consumers is evident, as it offers a lifestyle-oriented design and equipment, such as the flat-bottomed steering wheel, digital instrument cluster, and large central touch screen.
- The Wuling Xincheng, despite not being a fully electric vehicle, represents a strategic move by SAIC-GM-Wuling in the finance sector, offering an affordable price range compared to other automotive brands in China.
