Hyundai Motor Group Unveils Pleos: A Comprehensive Software Ecosystem for Autonomous Mobility

Hyundai Motor Group has introduced Pleos, a new software ecosystem designed to transform the company into a leading player in the mobility technology sector. At the Pleos 25 developer conference in Seoul, the Group showcased this innovative platform as a central component of its shift towards software-defined vehicles, autonomous technologies, and smart infrastructure connectivity.

Pleos is a comprehensive software ecosystem that blends cutting-edge vehicle operating systems with next-generation infotainment platforms. It embodies Hyundai's vision for smart, sustainable, and fully autonomous mobility infrastructure. Key features of Pleos include:

  1. Software-defined vehicle development: Pleos supports vehicles becoming more software-centric, enabling over-the-air updates and third-party app integration.
  2. Next-generation infotainment app development: Pleos offers an environment for developers and partners to create and seamlessly integrate apps into Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles, expanding the mobility ecosystem through an app marketplace called the Pleos App Market.
  3. Integrating data from all movements and devices: Pleos optimizes mobility management and enhances autonomous driving capabilities by integrating data from all movements and devices.
  4. Collaboration platforms and developer programs: The Pleos 25 developer conference introduced collaboration platforms and developer programs to foster an ecosystem of innovation and partnerships across the mobility sector.

Kia, a Hyundai Motor Group brand, uses Pleos to enable third-party app support on its modular PBV (purpose-built vehicle) platform, demonstrating Pleos' role in flexible and scalable mobility solutions adapted to various vehicle types and customer needs.

Pleos also integrates high-performance chips, cloud infrastructure, a vehicle OS, fleet management, and an infotainment system (Pleos Connect). Pleos Connect aims to expand to over 20 million vehicles by 2030. Additionally, Pleos Playground serves as an open development platform for third-party developers to contribute to the in-vehicle app ecosystem.

Hyundai is also developing software-defined vehicles (SDVs) by revolutionizing its electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture. The Next Urban Mobility Alliance (NUMA), another initiative by Hyundai, aims to create cloud-based, autonomous transport solutions, addressing societal challenges such as mobility equity, regional depopulation, and climate change by enhancing freedom of movement through innovative mobility solutions.

Key partners, including Samsung, Google, Naver, SOCAR, and Unity, have announced initiatives to enhance user experiences by integrating smart home connectivity, AI-powered content, car-sharing features, and immersive in-vehicle entertainment. Hyundai Motor Group is targeting the deployment of Level 2+ autonomous driving technology by 2027, featuring AI-powered decision-making using cameras and radars to enhance safety and operational precision.

In summary, Pleos is Hyundai Motor Group's strategic software ecosystem to underpin its shift from traditional automotive manufacturing to becoming a mobility technology company. It fosters an integrated, open-development environment and ecosystem to accelerate innovation in mobility services and sustainable, autonomous transportation.
