Illegal Employment Fight: 2023 Report Shows Increase in Criminal Cases and Damages

The Financial Control of Illegal Employment (Finanzkontrolle Schwarzarbeit) of the Potsdam main customs office has released its 2023 report. It shows an increase in criminal proceedings and a decrease in administrative offence proceedings, with a total of 2,128 criminal and 568 administrative cases. The report also highlights a higher damage sum of over 20 million euros, up from the previous year.

The main focus areas in 2023 were the gastronomy and hotel industry, nail studios, and sectors involving illegal employment and social security registration violations. The construction industry, hotels and restaurants, and the building cleaning industry were the primary targets due to their vulnerability to black work.

The controls resulted in 1,580 criminal proceedings and 408 administrative offence proceedings, leading to fines and imprisonment. The damage sum includes unpaid social security contributions, unpaid contributions to professional associations, improperly received social benefits, and wage discrepancies. The Financial Control Black Work operates in several districts and independent cities in the state of Brandenburg, including Potsdam and Brandenburg an der Havel.

The 2023 report underscores the significance of the Financial Control Black Work's efforts in combating illegal employment. The increase in criminal proceedings and the higher damage sum indicate the ongoing prevalence and impact of black work on the economy, jobs, and social systems. The focus on specific sectors and the comprehensive approach to calculating damages reflect the agency's commitment to tackling this issue.
