Imperial Brands to Close Last German Classic Tobacco Plant, Leaving 640 Jobs at Risk
Imperial Brands has announced plans to divest its Reemtsma plant in Langenhagen near Hannover, leaving around 640 employees uncertain about their future. The decision comes due to declining production volumes and challenging regulations in the classic tobacco segment. The food, beverages, and hospitality union (NGG) opposes the plans and demands a future perspective for the employees.
The Reemtsma plant in Langenhagen, operational since 1971, is the last of its kind in Germany. It produces classic cigarette factory products, fine-cut tobacco, and tobacco sticks for heaters. High production costs and insufficient capacity utilization have led to the decision to cease production at the site. Talks with the works council will begin to discuss the further course of action. Imperial Brands is considering the options for either selling or closing the factory, with it being unlikely that all jobs will be retained if the site is sold.
The decision to relocate production abroad and potentially sell or close the Reemtsma plant in Langenhagen has significant implications for the 640 employees affected. The future of the site and its workforce remains uncertain as discussions with the works council commence.
