Let's face it, finding a parking space for your big rig on the highways of Lower Saxony can be a beastly nightmare. That's the stark conclusion drawn from a nationwide survey by the Auto Club Europa (ACE). The situation? An "extreme shortage" to put it mildly. So serious that the average occupancy rate of parking areas during the survey period (April to June) was an astounding 150 percent - or double the number of parking spaces needed!
Our fabulous ACE volunteers stepped in to inspect 13 highway rest areas on the A2 and A7 motorways between April 15 and June 3. They visited each stop once during the workweek, counting the lights after 8:30 PM. During this nocturnal duty, they counted 690 parking spaces but found 1,032 parked trucks lurking - like a swarm of beetles on the tarmac. At 77 percent of the inspected parking facilities, these four-wheel giants even cozied up in the entry and exit lanes or on the hard shoulder.
Lower Saxony reigned supreme in unintentionally hosting the Tamworth Two-Step Contest, with the Zweidorfer Holz South rest area on the A2 between Peine and Braunschweig being the chaos king: 195 trucks parked in a measly 94 spaces, equaling a jaw-dropping 207 percent occupancy rate. Across the country, the occupancy rate was 151 percent, showcasing a parking arms race that puny humans can't win.
ACE: Beware of snap judgments
While each observation plays peekaboo, ACE advises not jumping to conclusions. ACE spokespeople say each observation is just a snap in time, so caution against overinterpreting individual instances. Nevertheless, their data underscores a recurring parking spot drought. The association is pushing for actions that include the creation of tens of thousands of additional truck parking spaces nationwide and securing potentially hazardous areas used as alternative parking zones.
