Trucks Stuck on German Highways? Auto Club Slams Packed Motorways

Insufficient room for trucks criticized by Automobile Club due to overcrowding conditions. - Insufficient Space for Large Vehicles: Swift Clearance Unfeasible

Tired of being high and tight? That's the reality for truck drivers on German motorways, according to a report from Auto Club Europa (ACE). In a recent study, ACE discovered a mind-boggling shortage of parking spots for big rigs, creating a serious traffic hazard.

Over a two-month period, from April 15 to June 3, ACE documented just how many massive vehicles were illegally parked on the autobahn each evening after 8:30 PM. Hotspots for this chaotic situation included southern Berlin Ring (A10) and the A24 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where trucks were improperly parked – posing significant risks to safer travel.

The ACE's results highlighted some alarming statistics. For instance, rest area Eichelborn Nord on the A4 in Thuringia was packed to the brim with trucks, boasting an eye-watering 60% overflow. Meanwhile, at the rest area Galgenberg Nord on the A38, things were barely any better, with a whopping 58% congestion. However, the Hermsdorfer Kreuz West seemed to be the lone wolf, managing to avoid a parking pile-up.

Last year, the regional management of the federal motorway company warned of overflowing facilities, particularly along the east-west axes A 4 and A 38. Not surprisingly, the Thuringian regional association of the transport industry is now calling for more truck parking spaces on the motorways.

In its snapshot report, ACE found massive overcrowding at 31 monitored rest areas in eastern Germany, counting a total of 2,168 parked trucks while only 1,412 spaces were available, resulting in an overcrowding of around 50%. Be warned, drivers – on 21 of the inspected rest areas, concrete traffic hazards were found, especially during nighttime with limited visibility, with trucks often parking in the entrance and exit lanes.

Now, grab a brew and let's talk stats. According to a survey by the Federal Highway Research Institute in 2023, there's a whopping 19,500+ parking space shortage nationwide on motorways. The Federal Association of Goods Transport, Logistics and Disposal estimates a staggering 40,000 missing parking spaces. On a brighter note, between 2018 and 2023, around 3,000 parking spaces were added, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Wait, did someone say parking spots?
