Invitation for Proposals on Carbon Emissions, Waste Management, and Urban Mobility Solutions

The Climaborough project, coordinated by Anci Toscana, is one of the initiatives funded by the Horizon Europe research program (Horizon-Miss-2021) with an allocation of approximately 11 million euros. The project involves 28 partners from 15 European countries and is focused on promoting recipes that can reduce CO2 emissions in cities that consume 65% of the energy.

The European Commission has selected three projects for developing innovative, low-cost solutions in waste management, green energy, and sustainable mobility, and the Climaborough project is part of this selection. The project aims to help European cities achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, but the specific challenges faced by each city involved in the project are not explicitly detailed in the available information.

The Climaborough project supports eleven cities across nine countries, focusing on bridging the gap between urban climate innovation design and implementation. The project emphasizes solution implementation and integration with broader AI and data-driven platforms to optimize urban climate strategies.

In the first phase of the Climaborough project, eight cities are involved: Turin, Athens, Ioannina (Greece), Differdange (Luxembourg), Grenoble (France), Sofia (Bulgaria), Cascais (Portugal), and Maribor (Slovenia). Each city has defined a specific challenge that the project will address.

  • Turin, Cascais, and Maribor will focus on improving textile waste collection.
  • Athens will work on energy and buildings.
  • Grenoble-Alpes will model the environmental impact of a urban regeneration project.
  • Differdange will aim to produce 100% of clean electricity locally.
  • Sofia will target reducing traffic in the city center.
  • Ioannina will focus on wastewater.

The Climaborough project is one of the 12 European cities involved in this tender. A new tender associated with the Climaborough project is worth 2.4 million euros and is open to any economic operator. Up to 16 pilot projects will be selected, with two projects for each of the 8 cities.

An online workshop will be organized on October 30th to inform potential candidates about the tender procedure for the Climaborough project. For precise challenges per city, consulting project documentation or official reports from Climaborough partners or the involved municipalities would be required.

  1. The European Commission's selection of the Climaborough project, focusing on urban climate innovation, signifies a significant move in merging environmental-science and finance, aiming to drive green energy solutions and sustainable mobility within Europe's cities.
  2. As part of the Horizon Europe research program, the Climaborough project is not only fostering scientific advancements in climate-change mitigation, but also encouraging the industry to play a pivotal role in implementing these solutions, thus fostering a greener economy.
  3. As the Climaborough project proceeds, it will simultaneously create opportunities for innovative ideas in waste management, textile waste collection in particular, as evidenced by the involvement of cities such as Turin, Cascais, and Maribor, signifying a critical intersection of science, finance, and the environment.
