July 2025 Manufacturing Order Book: Minimal Droplet of 0.1% Compared to the Previous Month, Yet a Positive Spike Over the Previous Year

In a recent report by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the order backlog in Germany's manufacturing sector decreased by 0.1% month-on-month in July 2025. This decline is primarily due to a decrease in the automotive industry (-1.9%), although it is seasonally and calendar-adjusted.

Despite the overall decrease in the order backlog, the production of data processing equipment, electronic, and optical products saw a significant increase of 1.6% in July 2025. This growth is attributed to improved industrial production within the manufacturing sector, although specific companies or sub-industries causing this increase were not identified in the available sources.

The order cover, which represents the number of months that current orders can sustain production, also saw some changes. The order cover in the overall manufacturing sector decreased to 7.8 months in July (from 7.9 months in June 2025). The order cover in the area of consumer goods increased by 1.5 percent, while the order cover in the manufacturers of investment goods decreased by 0.4 percent. In the manufacturers of intermediate goods, the order cover remained unchanged at 4.3 months, and in the manufacturers of consumer goods, the order cover increased to 3.6 months.

Orders from abroad increased by 0.2% in July 2025, while domestic orders decreased by 0.7%. Compared to July 2024, the order backlog increased by 4.3%.

It is worth noting that these figures are preliminary results released by Destatis on Wednesday. The data for the order cover is based on the same source.

The report paints a mixed picture of the German manufacturing sector, with positive signs in some areas, such as the increase in the production of data processing equipment, and challenges in others, such as the decline in the automotive industry's order backlog. As more detailed data becomes available, a clearer understanding of the sector's performance will emerge.
