Title: European Space Race: Germany's Leaders Urge Boost in Space Investment

Germany's state leaders from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Bremen are pressing for a substantial hike in Germany's investments in space, both domestically and at the European level. In a joint gathering in Berlin, the trio called for a yearly budget of one billion euros for Germany's national space program. They also highlighted the need for Germany to support the European Space Agency (ESA) with two billion euros annually, for reasons related to shared European security.

For reference, Germany currently funnels approximately 1.16 billion euros annually to ESA, as per Bavarian data. This year, the national space program is allocated around 300 million euros, with all states advocating for an increase to 500 million euros.

"Space vital for Europe's security and sovereignty"

The leaders maintain that applications and capabilities of space are crucial for Europe's independence and security. Space also serves as a hotbed for innovation, economic competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. It fuels high-quality jobs, bolsters other future industries, and helps combat global challenges, such as climate change.

Baden-Württemberg's Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) reiterated, "Modern life depends on technologies supported by space. Our security is largely safeguarded by services from space." Hence, space aids in fortifying defense capacities. Even though Europe exhibits strengths in navigation, communication, and Earth observation, Kretschmann cautioned, "We can't rest on our laurels in times of deep geopolitical divisions." He fears that European defense capabilities might fall under Elon Musk's—CEO of private US space company SpaceX— control.

"Not mere science fiction"

Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) underscored the urgency for Europe to stay abreast of international competition. "It's not about science fiction but about real scientific advancements and new economic power. That's vital for European independence," he commented. Germany needs to contribute its quota.

Bremen's Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) stated that the ESA is a European initiative aimed at securing Europe's future in space. In the rapidly evolving global situation, it's essential to maintain and expand this stance. The upcoming ESA Ministerial Council Meeting, slated for November in Bremen, shall deliberate on the financial resources allocated to the European Space Agency for the next three years.

What could propel the states' call to action: With Dorothee Bär (CSU), Germany now has a new black-red federal government that includes a minister explicitly responsible for the space sector—Bär is the Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space.
