LinkedIn Fined €310m for GDPR Breaches in Major Data Protection Case
LinkedIn has been fined €310m by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for violating the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The penalty, one of the largest under the GDPR, follows a complaint made in 2018 by French non-profit La Quadrature Du Net. The DPC, acting as the lead supervisory authority for LinkedIn in the EU, recently validated a draft decision submitted in July 2024. The inquiry found that LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company infringed on GDPR rules regarding consent, legitimate interest, and fairness in data processing. The decision includes three administrative fines totaling €310m, a reprimand, and an order for LinkedIn to comply with GDPR rules. The fine was issued due to LinkedIn's advertising practices that violated Articles 5, 6, 13, and 14 of the GDPR. LinkedIn acknowledged the DPC's decision but has not confirmed if it will challenge the fine. The €310m fine is one of the largest under the GDPR, reflecting the seriousness of LinkedIn's data protection breaches. The company must now ensure it complies with GDPR rules to avoid further penalties.
