"Major Transit Disruptions Alerted to Zurich Residents"
Zurich Tram Network Undergoes Major Overhaul
The VBZ transport company has announced the largest timetable change in its history for the city's tram network. The changes, described by Zurich city councillor, Michael Baumer, as a "major change", will affect numerous tram lines and aim to ensure the timely arrival of around 9,000 employees and 50,000 patients at the Lengg/Balgrist hospital area during rush hours.
One of the significant changes is the rerouting of Line 4 from Tiefenbrunnen to Rehalp, and Line 2 from Tiefenbrunnen station to the hospital cluster in Lengg. A new "Super Line 5" will also connect the Lengg hospital area and Uetlihof with the railway stations on the left and right banks of the lake.
To facilitate these changes, approximately 7,500 new timetable notices will be put up around the city, and around 1,800 new stop signs will be produced. However, VBZ Director, Martin Sturzenegger, has stated that there will certainly be confusion. He described the renovation of the stop at Zurich's main station as "very time-consuming and very complex".
The renovation of the stop at Zurich's main station is a crucial part of the complete redesign of Zurich's tram network, which is planned to be fully finished by 2036. Various construction phases will extend from 2024 through 2036 for different sections and new lines. Key milestones include the completion of parts in 2024, station rebuilds in 2026, and new routes finishing between 2028 and 2036.
The full new timetable for the city's tram network will be made available from mid-November, and the changes will become effective from December 14th. For more information, visitors can refer to the link provided: fahrplanwechsel.vbz.ch.
As the changes to the tram network unfold, commuters are advised to stay informed and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid any inconvenience. The VBZ encourages everyone to be patient during this period of transition.
