Majority of Online Shoppers Seek Repairs, Sustainability, and Second-Hand Options

A significant majority of online shoppers, 59 percent, express interest in repair services offered by online retailers. Meanwhile, 81 percent hold retailers accountable for promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of online shopping.

Currently, 40 percent of online shoppers utilise platforms like Vinted, Ebay Kleinanzeigen, and Shpock to purchase second-hand items. Among the younger demographic, aged 16 to 29, this figure rises to 52 percent. Women (44 percent) are more active on these platforms than men (36 percent).

Companies such as Original Unverpackt and SIRPLUS prioritise sustainability. Original Unverpackt, for instance, focuses on Zero Waste and employs carbon-neutral shipping methods through DHL GoGreen. However, specific details about their use of electromobility in deliveries remain unclear.

To offset their carbon footprint, 8 percent of online shoppers opt to pay a small surcharge for CO2 compensation of their package deliveries. Looking ahead, 28 percent of online shoppers can envision buying used items online in the future, and 56 percent can imagine bundling orders for the same-day delivery.

Online shoppers are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, with a majority interested in repair services and sustainable practices. While second-hand shopping is popular, particularly among younger consumers, there's potential for growth in this area. Additionally, more shoppers are willing to contribute to CO2 compensation and support initiatives that reduce packaging waste.
