Maple syrup producers in Canada are joyfully reporting an abundance this season / Plans for over 7 million new maple tree planting sites announced
In the spring of 2025, Quebec, Canada, saw an impressive harvest of 102,000 tonnes of maple syrup, making it one of the largest production seasons on record. This bountiful yield was based on a survey conducted by Groupe AGECO, which surveyed 1,328 maple operations in the province.
The Québec Maple Syrup Producers (QMSP), the organisation that manages the maple syrup industry in Quebec, has announced the allocation of 7 million new taps to meet the growing global demand for maple products. This expansion will increase Quebec's potential total to 64 million taps, an increase of 50% since 2020.
Luc Goulet, President of QMSP, stated that 2025 is the second-largest harvest season on record, surpassed only by the record year of 2024. Despite the large harvest, the QMSP estimates that the entire production of 2025 may be needed to supply current markets, with sales forecasts pointing to an exceptionally good sales year, potentially exceeding the large harvest.
The QMSP represents the interests of 13,500 maple syrup producers and 8,400 companies in Quebec. Approximately 72% of the world's maple syrup production comes from Quebec, which exports its products to over 70 countries.
The strategic maple syrup reserve, currently around 18,100 t, serves as a safety net in years with poor harvests and ensures continuity in the supply of domestic and export markets. However, a drawdown on the strategic reserve is not ruled out in light of the high demand.
The QMSP has also entered into a new agreement with the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts to create a "dynamic maple bank" on 50,000 hectares of public forest land over the next 20 years. This agreement will likely involve technological advancements and diversification to combat climate change effects, such as shorter sap runs and lower sugar content.

The QMSP's strategic approach to managing the industry suggests a structured approach to any expansion, which would likely involve careful planning and coordination with local stakeholders. While specific details about the plans for the new 7 million taps or the expansion to 50,000 hectares of public land in Quebec are not yet available, it is clear that Quebec is poised for continued growth in the maple syrup industry. The estimated market value of the 2025 maple syrup harvest is 750 million USD, underscoring the importance of this expansion to the global economy.
- The Québec Maple Syrup Producers (QMSP) will distribute 7 million new taps to enhance the maple syrup production industry, aiming to meet the increasing global demand for maple products.
- The QMSP's strategic maple syrup reserve helps ensure a steady supply of maple syrup, even during poor harvest years, but may be diminished due to high demand.
- As a part of their efforts to combat climate change effects, the QMSP has entered into an agreement with the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts to establish a "dynamic maple bank" on 50,000 hectares of public land over the next 20 years.
- The QMSP's expansion plans suggest a promising future for the food-and-drink industry, particularly in terms of global-cuisines, as Quebec's production growth may influenced significant changes in the finance and business sectors.
