Massive Fire Erupts at Chevron El Segundo Refinery, Southern California's Fuel Supply at Risk

A massive fire broke out at the Chevron El Segundo refinery in Los Angeles on Thursday night, sending a fireball into the air and startling residents. The refinery, which supplies a significant portion of motor vehicle fuels and jet fuel in Southern California, saw flames coming from multiple areas. Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed and is coordinating with local and state agencies to ensure public safety.

The blaze was first seen around 9:32 p.m. local time and was later contained by firefighters from Chevron's own brigade, along with assistance from neighboring cities El Segundo and Manhattan Beach. By 11 p.m., crews were still working to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation by state and federal safety authorities.

The Chevron El Segundo refinery is the largest on the West Coast, refining up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It supplies 20% of all motor vehicle fuels and 40% of jet fuel consumed in Southern California. Despite the fire, Chevron reported that all employees and contractors were accounted for and no exceedances were detected by the facility's fence line monitoring system. Manhattan Beach residents were advised to stay indoors but no evacuation orders were issued.

The fire at the Chevron El Segundo refinery has been contained, with no reported injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause, and Governor Newsom is coordinating with local and state agencies to ensure public safety. The refinery's significant role in supplying fuel to Southern California highlights the importance of its safe operation and the need for thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
