Modern Workforce Demands Adaptive BI Solutions
Traditional Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics solutions have historically offered separate tools for dashboards and data discovery, catering to distinct user groups. However, the modern workforce's data usage patterns and preferences have challenged this approach.
Historically, dashboards were used by 'information consumers' to regularly monitor business performance, while 'information producers' relied on visual discovery tools to answer questions and derive insights. This division reinforced rigid user roles. However, adapting BI to users' needs can break down these barriers and boost productivity.
The average workday now involves using multiple devices and tools to access and analyze data. This shift has been driven by the increasing use of mobile BI applications. Major BI solution providers such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and SAP Analytics Cloud actively support this trend towards mobility and digitalization. Some vendors, however, still license their software based on 'viewers and builders', maintaining these rigid roles.
Between 2012 and 2014, the use of mobile BI nearly quadrupled, indicating a significant shift in data access preferences. The modern workforce's data usage no longer aligns with traditional BI solutions, which often don't accommodate offline data access or decision-making.
To meet the evolving needs of the modern workforce, BI solutions must adapt. They should provide seamless, multi-device access to data, accommodate offline usage, and break down rigid user roles to maximize productivity and insight generation.
