DAZN Faces Class Action Over Alleged Illegal Price Hikes

Consumer advocates have taken sports streaming service DAZN to court over alleged illegal price hikes. The first oral hearing at the Higher Regional Court of Hamm is scheduled for September 4, 2026, with case file number I-12 VKl 1/24.

The class action was initiated by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (VZBV) last year, and over 4,500 people have already joined. Consumers and small businesses can register for the class action until at least September 25, 2026, through the association litigation register.

The lawsuit alleges that DAZN has made multiple price increases without consumer consent. In 2021 and 2022, the monthly price for existing customers was increased from 14.99 to 29.99 euros in the summer of 2022. The consumer associations criticize the price increase clause in the contracts as opaque and therefore invalid.

DAZN Germany CEO Alice Mascia justifies the price increase by stating improvements in the offer, such as purchasing a third of the Bundesliga rights and the majority of the Champions League games. However, the advocates argue that these improvements do not justify the significant price increase.

The sports streaming service DAZN offers games of the German Bundesliga and Champions League. The VZBV filed the class action against DAZN Limited at the Higher Regional Court of Hamm last year. The exact filing date is not explicitly stated in the sources, but the oral hearing is scheduled for September 4, 2026.

Registration for the class action is open and consumers are encouraged to join if they believe they have been affected by the alleged illegal price hikes. The outcome of the case could set a precedent for other streaming platforms and their pricing practices. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
