Newcastle's First District Energy Centre Opens, Boosting Low Carbon Efforts

Newcastle's First District Energy Centre Opens, Boosting Low Carbon Efforts

Newcastle has opened its first innovative District Energy Centre, the Helix District Energy Centre, as part of a £20m low carbon scheme. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Government's Local Growth Deal through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, this facility is set to significantly boost the city's climate change credentials.

ENGIE UK, in partnership with Newcastle City Council, has launched this high-profile energy centre. The joint venture, Regenerate Newcastle Partnership, aims to develop and operate district energy schemes within the city over a 40-year term. The Helix District Energy Centre supplies heating and cooling to 10 buildings and up to 450 homes on the Newcastle Helix site using a 5km network of underground pipes.

The centre generates chilled water, cooling facilities, and electricity using low carbon and cost-effective energy solutions, including natural gas fired CHP. It is expected to save over 30,000 tonnes of carbon over 40 years. Nicola Lovett, Chief Executive of ENGIE UK and Ireland, expressed delight in completing this new energy centre and hopes for more innovative low carbon energy projects in the future.

The opening of the Helix District Energy Centre marks a significant step towards Newcastle's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. With the support of the ERDF and the Government's Local Growth Deal, this centre is set to provide low carbon and cost-effective energy solutions to the city for decades to come.
