German-French Assembly for the Preservation of Night Trains Berlin-Paris - Night Train Between Berlin and Paris to Cease by Mid-December 2025
Night train services between Berlin and Paris, operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), are set to cease by mid-December 2025. The French government's withdrawal of around €10 million in annual subsidies has led to this decision, despite the route being a symbol of friendship and eco-friendly travel between the two nations.
The night train connection, once a 'well-established' and 'key link' between the capital cities, will be discontinued. This move comes as a surprise, given that night trains were deemed 'top priority projects' in the 2019 Treaty of Aachen, which aimed to bolster bilateral cooperation between France and Germany.
The Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly, established in March 2019 with 50 members from each country, was a testament to the growing partnership. However, the ÖBB, which operated the service, has announced the discontinuation as of December 14.
The withdrawal of French state subsidies has led to the discontinuation of the night train between Berlin and Paris. This move may impact the environmental and diplomatic benefits that the service once provided. Both countries will need to reassess their cooperation strategies in light of this development.
